Athens Regional starting new weight-loss program
It's Jan. 25. Are you still keeping up with that New Year's resolution to lose weight and get healthy?
If the newness of that resolution is wearing off, a new Athens Regional Medical Center campaign may have just what you need to keep those pounds coming off.
The hospital's Lighten Up Georgia program kicks off Monday, and will challenge individuals and teams to live healthier lives. It's a different kind of program, says hospital spokesman Mike Pilcher - social, interactive and, best of all, free.
"Free is the key word," Pilcher said. "We want to give everyone all the resources they need to adopt a healthier lifestyle."
Athens Regional has compiled a lot of weight-loss information - from healthy recipes and nutrition advice to workout guides - on the program's website, www.lightenupgeorgia.com.
In addition to the information, there's a social media portal for health-conscious people to share their stories.
Individuals can register, but program officials encourage teams of four to sign up together. After 16 weeks, the group that loses the most weight will win prizes.
"It's loosely based on the 'Biggest Loser' reality show, but everything is self-monitored," Pilcher said. "We're not shoving anything specific down anyone's throat."
Therein lies the point of Lighten Up Georgia. There is no set diet to follow or gym to join, because there is no one way to lose weight.
But weight loss is the clear goal. And program researchers found that people are more likely to lose weight and keep it off if they're tied
